Lakewood alumnus Louis Murphy surprised his alma mater on Thursday with a shipment of new Riddell helmets. Murphy, who runs the 1st Downs 4 Life Foundation, donated $5,000 to help the Spartans upgrade their helmets. The team will wear them Friday night against Gibbs.

“We knew that he was going to do something, but we didn’t know it was going to be this year,’’ Lakewood associate athletic director Necole Tunsil said. “We got the helmets today. We’ll be sporting the shiny new ones on Friday.’’

Tunsil said the NFL will match Murphy’s $5,000. She said that money will also go toward upgrading football equipment.

After graduating from Lakewood in 2005, Murphy was a receiver at the University of Florida and is currently playing for the New York Giants.
