Lakewood boys basketball coach Dan Wright, who is retiring at the end of the season, can reach a major milestone in Friday's season opener against Tarpon Springs.

If the Spartans win, Wright will tie former Gibbs coach Freddie Dyles for most wins in Pinellas County boys basketball history with 674.

Wright played for Dyles and was on the 1972 Gibbs team that won a state title. Wright went on to Florida Southern before coming back to St. Petersburg to coach. At Lakewood, he has averaged 20 wins a season for more than 30 years. He is one of only 10 coaches in the state to reach 600 victories.

A win against Tarpon Springs would put Wright in position to break the record on Dec. 8 when his team travels to play Gibbs. The record would have even more meaning considering it came against his alma mater and where his mentor coached.
