Lakewood made sure to get a jump start on the rest of the county in practice time with skill players showing up at 5:45 a.m. to lift weights, then go through conditioning on the field.
Each unit went in staggered shifts. Running backs and quarterbacks got the day started with the first weight room session, followed by receivers and defensive backs.
"It dedication, hard work and the right mind set to be here this early and get everything done," receiver Sermetrius Dennis said. "We're trying to do what it takes to win a state championship."
After a weight room session, players went on the field to run sprints, the toughest one coming at the end when they had to finish a series of shuttle sprints. Assistant coaches ran the morning session. Head coach Cory Moore will be there for tonight's pactice, which starts at 6.
"It's a rude awekening to be here at this time," defensive end Dante Fowler said. "It's my first time doing this. The defensive linemen mostly had workouts in the afternoon this summer. But this is something that will help us get in shape."
