Lakewood standout defenders Shaquill and Shaquem Griffin, who also excel at track for the Spartans, orally committed to the University of Central Florida on Friday.
It wasn’t a surprise — it was reported earlier this week that the Griffins were sold on UCF after a Tuesday visit, and merely had to convince their parents it was the right fit.
They did so, choosing the Knights over schools like Boston College, Minnesota and Cincinnati. The twins have said from the outset of the recruiting process that they were a package deal.
Both brothers are 6 feet 1, 185 pounds and play defensive back. Shaquem is expected to play linebacker this season as well, and maybe some running back. Here's a STORY on Shaquem, who had the fingers on his left hand surgically removed when he was 4, written earlier this year.
Shaquem was the Times' Track and Field Athlete of the Year in Pinellas County last spring, winning a state championship in the triple jump. He and his brother qualified in a number of events for the Spartans, and also started their own track club in St. Petersburg.
UCF does not have a men's track program.
