Lakewood coach Cory Moore has accepted an internship to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars this summer.
Moore is part of a program that runs from July 26 to August 13. He will be with the Jaguars for minicamps and some preseason games, helping out with running backs and special teams.
The timing will mean he would miss the first week of Lakewood’s fall practice, which starts Aug. 6. But Moore said he will not miss any significant time with the Spartans and might even be return in time for the start of practice.
“I can stay as long as I want with the Jaguars,” Moore said. “But I don’t want to spend too much time away from the guys at Lakewood.”
This isn’t the first time Moore has interned with a college or pro team. He also has worked at Kentucky State and Ohio State. In 2009, he worked in the summer with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Moore has aspirations of joining an NFL staff.
“That’s my ultimate goal,” Moore said. “If the Jaguars happened to offer me a job on staff I don’t what I would do. I would have to make a decision at that time. But I want to be here with the kids at Lakewood this season.”
