Lakewood coach Necole Tunsil took her girls basketball team to Miami over Thanksgiving break to play two of the top teams in the state, Hollywood Christian and Norland. The Spartans returned to St. Petersburg humbled.

Lakewood lost 62-40 to Hollywood Christian and 42-25 to Norland. Tunsil said she scheduled the games for one reason.

"They needed a dose of reality," Tunsil said. "I tried to warn them before the games. They were like, 'Yeah coach, we're ready.' Then at halftime (against Hollywood Christian) you could hear a pin drop. They didn't think it was going to be like that. Now we know what it takes. You think you know playing the teams around here, but you play those schools and you really know. I think they were a little embarrassed. We'll see how they react."

Lakewood plays Northeast tonight. Going into that game, the defending state champions are 2-2, including a 91-7 win over Pinellas Park.
