This will come as no consolation to USF fans, but Lakewood receiver Marquez Valdes really was close to signing with the Bulls. His visit to North Carolina State, coupled with the fact the school offers a sports management program, tipped the scales in favor of the Wolfpack.
“I was very comfortable there," Valdes said. “I want to be an agent when I graduate and I can do that there. (USF) came on late and I really liked it there, but in the end, with the help of family and friends, I decided N.C. State was the best place for me."
Valdes said he had 30 offers overall. Most of those came during his senior year, which made things interesting last fall.
“It became overwhelming," Valdes said. “I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go. I’m happy this day finally came."
Valdes was joined in Lakewood’s CAT Auditorium by quarterback Tracy Johnson, who signed with Texas Southern. He also had offers from Georgetown, Florida Atlantic and Howard.
“Those other schools wanted me to play receiver," said Johnson, who switched from receiver to quarterback in his junior year. “At Texas Southern I have a chance to play quarterback right away."
Teammates Rodney Adams (Toledo), Shaquill Griffin (UCF) and Shaquem Griffin (UCF) signed their letters of intent in Austin, Texas. All three played in the International Bowl on Tuesday night.
In addition, softball player Haley Michalski signed with St. Andrews University (Laurinburg, N.C.).
