Sean O’Flannery has resigned as Lakewood volleyball coach to take a full-time position as a teacher for Florida Virtual School.

Per Virtual School rules, first year employees are not allowed to coach a high school team. He will be replaced by a pair of coaches, Tom Penkethman and Kayla Rodack, both of whom are teachers at Lakewood

“I just felt I need to be a good soldier,’’ O’Flannery said. “As a coach you would like to be able to walk away when you are ready. I don’t feel like I’m ready. We had the basis of a very good team at Lakewood. We had a good core of players coming back and some good new players in the middle. I thought we could make another run.’’

O’Flannery, 43, said he coached Lakewood for the first week of practices before finally deciding to leave the school. He taught social studies at Lakewood, but will teach driver’s education for Florida Virtual School.

Last season, Lakewood advanced to the Class 5A region final before losing to Merritt Island. O’Flannery has coached volleyball for 15 years at Northeast and Lakewood. He said he might be ready to coach again next season.

“I’m sure they’ll be some openings somewhere,’’ O’Flannery said. “And I’ve reached out to coaches and told them I’d be happy to help out if they needed it. I’m not turning my back on anybody.’’
