Shanel Sweet, the 2010-11 St. Petersburg Times' North Suncoast girls basketball player of the year, will sign today with Queens University of Charlotte the senior point guard told the Times today.
Sweet went on an official visit to the Royals' Charlotte, N.C., campus on March 25 and came away having developed a rapport with the current players on the team as well as a love for the surrounding area.
"When I got there, the community the school is in is beautiful," Sweet said. "I loved it there. When I played a couple pick-up games with the team, we really bonded a lot. The minute we started playing, we just clicked."
Averaging 18.4 points, 5.3 assists and 3.6 steals, the 5-foot-8 Sweet led Land O'Lakes to the Class 4A region finals and a 24-3 overall record this season. The region final appearance was the first in Gators' history.
Queens University of Charlotte is a Division II school that plays in Conference Carolinas. The Royals finished 14-14 in the 2010-11 season and were 12-8 in conference play.
Sweet will sign today at 2:30 p.m. at Land O'Lakes.
