Largo running back Jarvis Stewart is out for Friday's Class 6A, District 7 game against Bradenton Lakewood Ranch after sustaining a hip injury in practice this week.
Stewart was initially hurt against Dixie Hollins two weeks ago and used the Packers' bye week to get healthy. But he pulled a muscle in his hip during a non-contact drill in Tuesday's practice. Largo coach Rick Rodriguez said the injury is serious enough that Stewart might not play the rest of the season.
The loss of Stewart is a blow for the Packers, who are undefeated in 6A-7 and can clinch their seventh straight district title with a win Friday. Stewart has rushed for more than 700 yards this season and scored 12 touchdowns. Largo quarterback Juwan Brown is the team's second-leading rusher with 232 yards. Rodriguez said the Packers will go with a number of backs, including Derrick Doss, Harry Brown and Claxton Boykins.
"We still have some guys who can run the ball," Rodriguez said. "We have a game plan and we'll be ready for (Lakewood Ranch)."
