Each week, our HomeTeam staffers will nominate one male and one female Hot Shot athlete from each of the counties we cover, then we turn the voting over to our readers. These nominations span Saturday, Sept. 22 through Friday, Sept. 28. The winners get a free T-shirt and bragging rights over every other school in the area. Read up on what made our nominees stand out, then vote until noon Monday.
Claudia Cancello, Mitchell swimming & cross country: The senior two-sport star won the Mitchell Invitational cross country meet (20:18) on Sept. 22 and placed first in the 500 free and 200 individual medley and two relays against Ridgewood and Anclote on Wednesday.
Karissa Rhoads, Bloomingdale volleyball: The sophomore outside hitter had 20 kills in the Bulls’ district-opening win over Newsome on Thursday night, shaking off an ankle injury that sent her to the bench for much of the first set.
Jessica Steidl, East Lake volleyball: Taking over at libero for the two-time defending state champions, Steidl made sure nothing hit the floor against rival Palm Harbor University with 58 digs to lead the Eagles to a five-game victory.
Eddie Burgos, Sunlake football: The senior running back/defensive back rushed for 156 yards and the Seahawks’ first four touchdowns, broke up a fourth-down pass and had a second-half interception in Sunlake’s bounce-back 36-7 win over Mitchell.
Ryan Davis, Northeast football: The sophomore quarterback led a furious second-half rally against Tarpon Springs, throwing for 343 yards (281 in the second half) and six touchdowns as the Vikings erased a 31-7 halftime deficit to win 41-37.
Javaughn “JJ” Johnson, Robinson football: The junior outside linebacker had a school-record three defensive TDs in a rout of Blake (one INT return, two fumble recoveries) and already has six defensive TDs this season (another school record).
