Longtime Springstead boys soccer coach retiring

Springstead boys soccer coach Sal Calabrese is retiring from coaching, principal Susan Duval confirmed in an email.

Calabrese spent 19 years as the Eagles’ head coach and was the Times’ co-coach of the year for Citrus and Hernando counties in 2007.

Calabrese leaves Springstead after one of his team’s best runs ever – a trip to the Class 4A region semifinals. The Eagles clinched their second district title in the last 20 years and a 19-3 record – the second-most wins in program history.

The school has not set a timetable for finding his replacement, Duval said.

Calabrese did not immediately return a phone message.
