Zephyrhills running back Chris Reaves scored an incredible nine touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 51-41 victory over Anclote on Friday night to earn our Times Male Athlete of the Week award.
Wait, what? Two of those touchdowns were called back by penalties? Reaves only scored seven times? Well, the votes have already been collected. We can’t do a recount. Begrudgingly, I guess, we’ll have to give Reaves the award anyway.
All joking aside, Reaves had a monster game in Zephyrhills’ district finale against Anclote. The senior scored seven touchdowns in a variety of ways to single-handedly lead his Bulldogs, who trailed 34-15 at one point after halftime, to victory.
How many ways? Reaves scored three second-half touchdowns on the ground, rushing into the end zone from 20, 15 and 3 yards away and finishing with 154 yards on 18 carries. He caught a 25-yard pass from quarterback Jacob Smith for a score in the second quarter and added a 12-yard touchdown grab in the third. Also, Reaves had two kickoff returns for touchdowns, the first a 64-yarder in the opening quarter and another in the fourth quarter with his team trailing. That one went for 80 yards.
