Berkeley Prep sophomore QB Brad Mayes, who leads the undefeated Buccaneers into Friday night's Class 3A, District 5 showdown against 5-1 Clearwater Central Catholic, has received an offer from the University of Massachusetts.
Mayes' dad, Tom, confirmed that the offer -- his son's first -- arrived Wednesday afternoon.
Mayes (6-foot-2, 180 pounds), who in May won the Buccaneers' QB job vacated by four-year starter Destin Nichols, has totaled nearly 950 yards in six games. A pupil in the John Kaleo QB Academy, he is 41-for-79 for 763 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions in 2012.
UMass, which competes in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), is 0-6 this season.
