The most honored player from Jesuit's 2011 state runner-up team will open the '12 season by honoring his school.
Tigers senior ace Lance McCullers Jr., who won the Jackie Robinson Award last August as the nation's top rising senior high school player, will present the award to Jesuit prior to the Tigers' preseason opener Tuesday against Land O'Lakes. The ceremony is set to begin at 7:13 p.m.
Immediately afterward, Tampa Bay Rays left-hander David Price will throw out the first pitch.
"The Jackie Robinson Award is the most prestigious award I have yet to receive," McCullers said in a statement released by Jesuit.
“Throughout the years, I have been fortunate to receive many accolades for my abilities on the field, and I am very blessed and am thankful for each one. However, to be recognized for my off-the-field endeavors, and for others to recognize and really see my character and integrity, is truly a humbling experience. This award will be one of my most cherished honors.
"I believe this award not only honors me but also Jesuit and its core values, of creating 'Men for Others.' For this reason, I am honored to present the Jackie Robinson Award to Jesuit High School.”
The award is given annually to the player who exhibits outstanding character and leadership, is involved in his community and embodies the value of being a student-athlete.
Last season, McCullers -- who also plays shortstop -- finished 5-3 with a 2.02 ERA with 79 strikeouts in 52 innings. Offensively, he hit .422 with 38 hits, 10 doubles and seven home runs.
