Mitchell ace Cobi Johnson will participate in the Under Armour All-America baseball game this summer. Although his invitation has not been formally announced, Johnson announced his acceptance on Twitter, which Mustangs coach Scot Wilcox confirmed.
"Just accepted my invite to be an Under Armour All American!" Johnson tweeted. "Thanks for the support along the way."
Johnson established himself as one of Tampa Bay’s top juniors this spring. The 6-foot-4 Florida State commit posted a 1.68 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 71 innings. He allowed only seven hits and one earned run in playoff wins over Sebring and Winter Haven to get the Mustangs to their first trip to the Class 6A region final.
An all-North Suncoast selection at catcher last spring, Johnson batted .426 with 34 RBIs and 16 doubles this season. The Sunshine Athletic Conference named him its player of the year.
The all-star game is at Wrigley Field on Aug. 24 and will be televised live on the MLB Network. Three other Florida players – but none from Tampa Bay – have been announced as participants.
