TRINITY – A knee injury that at first was believed to be just a bump in the road for Mitchell QB Cody Van De Boe has turned out to be much more serious.
He's out for the season.
Doctors told the Mitchell senior last week he has a torn ACL in his right knee. Initially, they thought it was a sprain and that he likely could return in October from the injury sustained in the team’s preseason game at Hudson.
“Losing Cody is a tragedy,” Mitchell coach Brian Wachtel said.
According to Wachtel, Van De Boe is taking the news as well as can be expected.
“He’s handling it with maturity,” Wachtel said. “He actually came out to practice the day the doctors told him and looked me in the eye. He was overwhelmed. That takes guts.”
With Van De Boe out, Mitchell has gotten solid production at QB from Matt Michaels, who has had a hand in five touchdowns while leading to Mustangs to a 3-0 start.
“The team has really rallied,” Wachtel said.
