Just sitting around, waiting for Berkeley Prep volleyball to win another state championship because you know, that's what the Bucs do.
ATHLETE OF THE NIGHT
I'm not sure I've ever read a volleyball story and wished I had actually the seen the match, but it had me at "busted lip" and "bags of ice on their shoulders". I mean, Jordan Burgess and Amber Mirabello combined for 117 attacks? Berkeley rallied from 2-1 down? Yowza! But I'm giving top honors to MacKenzie Dagostino, who messed around and got a triple double: 53 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs.
MEANDERING BONUS: Berkeley sweeps tonight. Book it.
TEAM OF THE NIGHT
The last time the St. Petersburg girls basketball beat Boca Ciega was 1934 in a thrilling 16-14 overtime contest. No? Really? Okay, so maybe it hasn't been that long, but it's been a while. That streak is now over after the Green Devils handed the Pirates a 58-49 loss Wednesday night. When I talked to coach Tamika Coley on Sunday, she was wondering who her scorers, other than daughter Kamika Idom, were going to be this season. Well, how about Teyia Brown (15 points) and Ta’Nia McCullum (10)? The Green Devils were ranked No. 6 in our preseason Super 7, and the Pirates were No. 2. Guess we'll be fixing that.
MEANDERING BONUS: Your real time Super 7 in Pinellas: 1. Lakewood, 2. Clearwater, 3. Indian Rocks Christian, 4. St. Petersburg, 5. Bogie, 6. Northside Christian, 7. St. Petersburg Catholic.
STARS OF THE NIGHT
1. Bogie's Tamara Taylor, who is headed to USF, scored 37 of her team's 49 points. It's good that she scored so many; bad that the rest of the team scored so few.
2. Idom had 17 points, but she'll take the victory over Bogie, one she helped secure by sinking six of seven free throws down the stretch.
3. East Lake's Johnna Trease scored 16 points to lead unbeaten East Lake to a 64-24 over Anclote.
4. Tatiana Manuel of Brooks-Debartolo scored 22 points in a win over Shorecrest, but also had 16 rebounds and shot 10 of 12 from the floor. The sophomore has made 20 of 23 shots in two games, and is averaging 23 points and 15.5 rebounds.
It was a good night for girls soccer rivalries. PHU beat Countryside by a shocking 7-0 score, Seminole knocked off East Lake 2-1, and River Ridge put away Land O'Lakes 3-0. All three are typically some of the best soccer matches of the whole season.
RANDOM THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Speaking of River Ridge soccer, Jessica Tata scored one of the goals, and does the senior Royal Knight not have a perfect one-name soccer name? In the grand tradition of Pele, Ronaldhino and Cafu, I will now only refer for her as Tata. It just seems to work for soccer, no?
"Tata scored twice in the second half to lead River Ridge to another victory Friday night..." See! It sings!
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT (and maybe all of 2010)
Mackenzie Dagostino, on Wednesday's thrilling victory over Bishop Moore: “I would watch this (match) over and over again like it was my favorite Glee episode, over and over again.”
We're guessing that would mean watching the Britney Spears episode, because that ruled! Or, that one where Vocal Adrenaline lead singer Jesse St. James defected to New Directions and stole poor Rachel's heart. But clearly, Dagostino cannot be talking about any episode that actually showed the remarkably uncoordinated but boyishly cute Finn as the team quarterback, because clearly dude has never thrown a football in his life.
