SEMINOLE – Aside from a recent two-week stretch, Clearwater Central Catholic golfer Ryan Orr has been near flawless on the course.
Entering Thursday’s Mustang Invitational, though, Orr’s confidence was buried knee deep in a bunker.

After winning the season-opening East Lake Invitational on Sept. 3, Orr struggled at the Outback Invitational 10 days ago, limping to the East Lake Woodlands clubhouse with an 81.

On Thursday, Orr regained his form, which he hopes to carry through a deep postseason run.

At Seminole Lake Country Club, Orr shot 1-under 70 to win the Mustang Invitational by one stroke and earn his second major tournament victory of the season.

“Everything just started to click,” Orr said. “Today, I missed two greens. I missed two fairways. I was just hitting everything perfectly solid.”

Orr birdied three holes and could have posted a sub-70 round if not for double bogey on the par-4 No. 13 after pulling his drive.

“I hit one tee shot out of bounds,” he said. “That’s the only blemish I had.”

St. Petersburg’s Jack Maguire and Jake Kevorkian each fired even-par 71 to tie for second individually and lead the Green Devils to a dominating team victory. St. Petersburg had four golfers shoot 76 or better to come in at 294 as a team, 14 strokes better than second-place Palm Harbor University (308) and 15 lower than third-place Seminole (309).

Maguire’s score was especially pleasing to first-year St. Petersburg coach Kevin Dyer, considering the back flare-ups the junior has been dealing with all season.

“(Maguire) told me today he’s practiced harder in the last week than any time in the last two years,” Dyer said.

Blake Dyer and Zack Monawar each carded 76 to cap an impressive round for the Green Devils. Monawar’s score was a career tournament best.

PHU was paced by Colby Norris (75) and Dustin Dingus (76). Seminole got low rounds from Adam Norris (74) and Eric Sines (76).
