An official visit to Wisconsin is all Nature Coast DE Rohan Blackwood needed to make his college decision.
The three-star senior orally committed to the Badgers over the weekend after watching No. 18 Wisconsin’s 48-0 win over Tennessee Tech, he said Sunday night in a text message. He chose the Badgers over USF, Nebraska, West Virginia and others and visited the Cornhuskers in Week 1.
Blackwood is one of the top recruits in the North Suncoast and Tampa Bay for the class of 2014.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Blackwood entered the season at No. 9 on the Times’ HomeTeam 100. Rivals evaluates him as a three-star recruit and the country’s No. 26 weakside defensive end; 247Sports considers him a three-star prospect and 30th nationally at his position.
Blackwood, a former Gulf player, is one of the area’s top two-sport athletes, earning all-North Suncoast honors in basketball and football last season. As a junior, he recorded 15 sacks and 69 tackles, and he has three touchdown catches in his NCT career. In basketball, he averaged 15.4 points and 11.0 rebounds and helped the Sharks advance to the Class 5A state semifinals in 2012.
The Badgers seldom dip into Tampa Bay but recruit Florida regularly; 10 current players are from south Florida.
Blackwood has not played in the regular season this year after being handed a three-week suspension following his controversial ejection from the kickoff classic.
