Newsome hired longtime assistant Bill Highsmith as its new baseball coach, athletic director Paul Lindstrom confirmed Thursday.
Highsmith has been with the Wolves since the school opened, Lindstrom said, and will take over after Brian Black’s short stint as coach. Black was hired in June to replace Zach Walker, who resigned in April, but the school was once again searching for a new coach by the first week of August.
Walker coached the Wolves for three years, going 17-9 in 2008 en route to the Class 5A region semifinals. But Newsome followed that up with consecutive losing seasons, finishing with a 7-16 record in 2010 after losing to Armwood in the Class 5A-8 district quarterfinals.
