No break for their bats with tournaments on tap

While their classmates head to the beach or cruise the mall (do kids do that anymore?), most of the county’s high school baseball players will be competing in spring break tournaments. Here’s a breakdown of where to go to find your team in action:

43rd Annual Dunedin Spring Tournament

When/where: Monday-March 30, Englebert Complex, Dunedin

Schedule: Monday — Game 1: Carrollwood Day vs. East Lake, 8 p.m., Field 4; Game 2: Osceola vs. Pinellas Park, 6, Field 3, Game 3: Calvary Christian vs. River Ridge, 5, Field 5, Game 4: Canterbury vs. Clearwater Central Catholic, 5, Field 4, Game 5: Dunedin vs. Palm Harbor University, 8, Field 5. Tuesday — Game 6: Countryside vs. Game 1 winner, Field 4, 8 p.m.; Game 7: Game 4 winner vs. Game 5 winner, Field 5, 8; Game 8: Game 4 loser vs. Game 5 loser, Field 3, 6; Game 9: St. Petersburg Catholic vs. Game 2 winner, Field 4, 5; Game 10: Tarpon Springs vs. Game 3 winner, Field 5, 5. Wednesday — Game 6 winner vs. Game 10 winner, Field 4, 5 p.m.; Game 9 loser vs. Game 10 loser, Field 5, 5; Game 1 loser vs. Game 3 loser, Field 3, 6; Game 2 loser vs. Game 6 loser, Field 4, 8; Game 7 winner vs. Game 9 winner, Field 5, 8. March 29 — Losers bracket games at 5 p.m., winners bracket games at 8. March 30 — Consolation games at 5 p.m., championship at 8.

What to expect: This is a solid field. Most of Pinellas County’s best are in the tournament, and several teams can win it. Dunedin, Tarpon Springs and East Lake are hot, and Osceola and Countryside are no slouches. Pitching will be key, and East Lake has a lot of it. Just saying.

Favorite: Tarpon Springs

Sleeper: East Lake

Northeast Spring Break Tournament

When/where: Saturday, Monday-Wednesday at Northeast High

Schedule: Saturday — Game 1: Clearwater vs. Lakewood, 11 a.m., Game 2: Dixie Hollins vs. Shorecrest, 2 p.m., Game 3: Brooks-DeBartolo vs. Orlando Cypress Creek, 5, Game 4: Northeast vs. Largo, 8. Monday — Game 3 loser vs. Game 4 loser, 2 p.m.; Game 1 loser vs. Game 2 loser, 5; Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner, 8 p.m. Tuesday — Losers bracket game, 2 p.m., Losers bracket game, 5, Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 8. Wednesday — Third-place game, 4 p.m., championship, 7

What to expect: A fairly competitive tournament filled with teams that aren’t powerhouses but aren’t bad either. Cypress Creek could be the wild card with eight wins against competitive Orlando teams. Dixie Hollins is dangerous, and Northeast has some good pitching. Sounds like it should be a fun tournament.

Favorite: Dixie Hollins

Sleeper: Northeast

Steve Georgiadis Tournament

When/where: Monday-March 30, Seminole High School

Schedule: Monday — Indian Rocks Christian vs. St. Petersburg, 4 p.m.; Seminole vs. Northside Christian, 7. Tuesday — Tampa Bay Christian vs. Northside Christian, 4 p.m.; Indian Rocks Christian vs. Cambridge Christian, 7. Wednesday — Cambridge Christian vs. St. Petersburg, 4 p.m.; Seminole vs. Tampa Bay Christian, 7. Thursday — Fifth-place game, 4 p.m.; third-place game, 7. March 30 — Championship, 7

What to expect: Seminole is coming off a brutal week, so this tournament might provide a break. St. Petersburg can hit the ball all over the place, but Seminole has so much pitching and hitting depth. Indian Rocks Christian can hit a little and might give these teams some problems.

Favorite: Seminole

Sleeper: St. Petersburg
