North Suncoast district track: Matchups to watch

Class 3A-6
When/where: 11 a.m. today, at Wiregrass Ranch
Defending champs: Boys, Land O’Lakes; girls, Wiregrass Ranch
Boys event to watch: 100-meter dash. One of track’s flashiest events features Pasco County’s three quickest runners. Sunlake’s Eddie Burgos, Zephyrhills’ Jordan Roberts and Mitchell’s Michael Tancreti finished 1-2-3 at the conference meet.
Girls event to watch: 200-meter dash. Hallie Grimes (Land O’Lakes), JaKayla Jones (Zephyrhills) and Gelisa Jenkins (Wiregrass Ranch) were separated by less than half a second at the conference meet. Add in defending champ Wilena Little (Springstead), and this could be one of the best races of the day.

Athletes to watch
Quadavis Battle, Central:
Hernando County’s hurdles champ finished in the top five in both hurdles events last spring.
Nikita Shah, Wiregrass Ranch and Claudia Cancello, Mitchell: Pasco County’s top two distance runners finished 1-2 in the 1600 at the conference meet. Cancello surprised Shah by beating her at state in cross country this fall.
Bobby Harris, Springstead: As a sophomore, he placed third at state in the high jump. He’s dominated this spring and could be in for a strong showing.
