Boys basketball
Land O’Lakes 61, Mitchell 43:
Ernest McClendon scored a season-high 22 points as the Gators won their fifth straight game while snapping the Mustangs’ five-game win streak. The Gators (11-6) completed a season sweep of Mitchell (15-4) and wrapped up first-place in 6A-10 after both teams entered the night 5-1 in league play. Victor Obi-Anadiume had 15 and Jackson Cannon scored 12 for the Gators, while Jordan Dong paced Mitchell with 11.

Anclote 44, Gulf 35: Playing a third straight game without leading scorer and point guard Brandon McWhorter, the Sharks (11-8) picked up a solid district win over their rivals. The Sharks trailed at halftime, but Ty Carter scored seven of Anclote’s 14 points and the defense held the Bucs (9-10) to just one basket as they took control. “The third quarter we kind of stepped it up on defense, which got our offense going,” Anclote coach Jason Szymanski said. The Sharks were paced by Saverio Galati’s season-high 13 points, while Danny Rangel led Gulf with 10.

Sunlake 66, River Ridge 47: The Seahawks (9-9) made 10 3-pointers to overcome 26 points from John Childs and remain in contention for second-place in 6A-10. Childs’ outburst wasn’t enough to stop the Royal Knights from falling to 1-17.

Hudson 64, Ridgewood 56: Jamal Branco’s 23 points led the Cobras to their second impressive victory in a row. Marcus Green led Ridgewood with 20 points.

Wiregrass Ranch 79, Gaither 47: The Bulls are getting hot, winning their sixth straight game, including four district contests, to surge within a half-game of league leader Chamberlain.

Girls basketball
Gulf 57, Anclote 33:
Four players scored in double figures as the Bucs (20-2) won their 10th straight.

Mitchell 34, Land O’Lakes 33: The Mustangs didn’t have a scorer in double figures, but it didn’t matter as they pulled out the overtime victory. Nina Argento had eight points and Kimberly Knudsen had seven as the Mustangs (13-8) swept the Gators.

Fivay 43, Wesley Chapel 40: Alicia Artley, coming off a season-high 23 points Thursday night, scored a game-high 19 Friday as the Falcons (10-11) beat the Wildcats (4-18).

HomeTeam Hot Shots

Victor Obi-Anadiume, Land O’Lakes: Scored a season-high 15 points for the second straight game after scoring in single digits in eight of his previous nine.

Chris Gregory, Anclote: May have only scored five points, well below his season-average 17, but he dished out a season-high six assists and was key in the Sharks’ victory against his former team.

Brenden Huynh, Sunlake: Sophomore guard scored a career-high 24 points, more than twice his season average, to lead the Seahawks.

Lisa Jadick, River Ridge: Goalkeeper saved 10 shots and blocked two penalty kicks to give the Royal Knights the district title.

Did you know?
The Anclote boys basketball team is hoping to get on another win streak before districts. The Sharks started the season 7-0, but haven’t recovered after an emotionally-crushing 75-72 loss to Wesley Chapel in December. Following the loss to the Wildcats, the Sharks lost seven of their next eight games. But a pep talk after this week’s loss to Pasco has put Anclote on a two-game win streak with four games left before districts.

Standout performance? Milestone achievement? Coaches are asked to call 1-800-333-7505, ext. 8123 no later than 11 each night to ensure their team is included in our roundup of memorable performances.
