Girls region basketball
6A, Winter Haven 56, Mitchell 17:
The Mustangs’ season ended Thursday in a 39-point loss to the defending state runnerup. It was the fewest points Mitchell scored all season and the most lopsided defeat since a 39-point loss to Olympia in November. The Mustangs earned back-to-back trips to regionals for the first time since 2006-07. Mitchell finished the season 15-12 — its second consecutive year with a winning record.

2A, Avon Park Walker Memorial 53, Hernando Christian 30: The Lions’ playoff run fell short when they were eliminated from the Class 2A region quarterfinals. Hernando Christian rattled off six consecutive wins before losing to Academy at the Lakes last week and getting knocked out by Walker Memorial. The Lions finished their season 11-12 and as Class 2A, District 8 runnerup. This was the program’s second trip to the region tournament. The first came in 2008.

Number of the night
3 Gulf’s win over Tavares sent the Buccaneers to the region semifinals for the third year in a row. The Bucs’ softball team topped Wiregrass Ranch 4-2, giving Gulf a season-opening win for the third consecutive year. Madison Morlan earned the win.

Standout performances from Thursday night

Andrea Mauger, Academy at the Lakes: The junior guard/forward scored her 1,000th career point in her team’s 71-33 blowout win over Winter Haven All Saints.

Brianca Roberts and Allahon Marbra, Pasco: The sophomore guards combined for 45 of the Pirates’ 61 points to help Pasco advance to the region semifinals for the first time since 2003.

Kayla Kivinski, Gulf: The sophomore sharpshooter scored 13, grabbed 17 rebounds and added four steals in the Buccaneers’ 57-45 win over Tavares.

Lyndsey Pospisil, Nature Coast: Senior post player scored 21 in a season-ending loss to Pasco.

Kenzi Maguire, River Ridge: Had a double, a triple and a home run in the Royal Knights’ 15-0 win over Ridgewood. Not bad for a freshman catcher.
