North Suncoast: Sunday Morning QB wrapup

Game balls
The Bulldogs’ 43-14 victory over Wiregrass Ranch gave Zephyrhills a 6-4 season. Reggie Roberts’ crew missed the playoffs, but finishing a few minutes away from the postseason after back-to-back two-win campaigns is a strong turnaround. Things are looking up for the Bulldogs.

Coach Ryan Benjamin, River Ridge: The former Royal Knights player has turned around his alma mater. A blowout win over Hudson gave River Ridge a 6-4 record — its first winning season since 1999.

ATH Rashaud Daniels, Sunlake: The senior speedster rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns and added an interception in a senior night win over Gulf.

DB/WR Brennan Smiley, Gulf: The junior athlete caught Gulf’s only TD and had an interception, too, in a loss to Sunlake in the Bucs’ season finale.

TE Kent Taylor, Land O’Lakes: The Florida commit finished his high school career with six receptions and caught a 14-yard TD pass on the final play of his season in the Gators’ 32-12 win over Wesley Chapel.

QB Ty and Keegan Tanner, Wesley Chapel: The brothers scored both of the Wildcats’ touchdowns. Ty rushed for a 13-yard score, and Keegan, who is being recruited by Stetson and others, returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown.

WR Tyre Creary, Wiregrass Ranch: The sophomore athlete caught a 68-yard touchdown pass from Jake Day in the Bulls’ season-ending 43-14 loss to Zephyrhills. It was his first TD catch of the year.

RB Austin Schwarz, River Ridge: The two-way standout finished his high school career with a two-touchdown performance against Hudson.

LB/TE Luke McLeod, LB/TE, Springstead: The junior not only caught the key pass — a 32-yard bomb from fellow senior Taylor Minter on a reverse wide receiver option pass — but recorded the Eagles’ only sack in a win over Anclote.

LB Vik Taylor, Fivay: The sophomore forced a fumble in the final three minutes Friday night to keep the Falcons’ comeback hopes alive in an eventual 28-20 loss to Citrus.

RB Alonzo Pettiford, Anclote: The senior athlete rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns in the Sharks’ heartbreaking 24-21 loss to Springstead.

“It’s been a great year for us already and it’s not over yet. We’re headed to the playoffs next week. We’re a young football team. We’re not polished yet. But we’ve got a ton of talent on this team and we’re building it the right way.”Fivay coach Chris Taylor on preparing for the playoffs after a loss to Citrus.

Playoff pairings
District 6A-6:
District champion Hernando hosts USF commit Chris Bivins and Gainesville. Runnerup Sunlake heads to Ocala Vanguard — the 6A-5 district champ — in the Seahawks’ first postseason game.

District 5A-6: Undefeated Pasco breezed to the district title and hosts Alachua Santa Fe. The Pirates will do so without star athlete Trey Dudley-Giles, who must serve a one-game suspension for being ejected from Pasco’s win over Zephyrhills. Fivay opens at perennial power North Marion, the 5A-5 champion, in the Falcons’ first playoff game.
