Girls region soccer
3A, Eustis 5, River Ridge 1: The Royal Knights’ best season in school history ended Tuesday night with a tough loss at Eustis in the region finals.

“I’m very proud of them,” coach Skip Glover said. “It’s one of those deals — we weren’t just happy to be here. We thought we had a chance. But not matter what, they’re still my girls, and I’m proud of them.”

Eustis came out firing against River Ridge (18-5-1). The Panthers scored early when a miscommunication on defense let Eustis chip the ball over the top and into the back of the net.

The Royal Knights pressed after that to try to even it up but fell into mistakes and fell behind more.

“We just got out of our rhythm a little bit,” Glover said. “They took advantage of it.”

River Ridge got its only goal late in the contest. Junior Sarah Olin set up senior Nicole Screnock, who pounded it into the net for her 20th goal of the season.

Region boys soccer
3A, Land O’Lakes 4, Fivay 0: Gators senior Nathan Dalton delivered one of the top performances in his career, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist to lift Land O’Lakes (17-2-2) past Fivay (14-9-5) in the region quarterfinals.

“He was fantastic for us,” coach Mark Pearson said. “He really did everything we needed him to do.”

His pass to Andy Garcia 15 minutes into the game set up Garcia’s 25-yard strike from the right side of the box.

“We just got on a roll from there,” Pearson said.

The Gators outshot Fivay 31-2 to cruise to the victory.

Dalton added two goals before scoring on what Pearson called a “fantastic strike” from 30 yards out to seal the game.

Boys basketball
Mitchell 69, Central 63:
Jake Driscoll, one of Pasco County’s top players, exploded for 23 points to lead the Mustangs. It was his best performance since returning earlier this month from an arm injury that cost him much of his senior season. Jordan Dong added 15 points for Mitchell, while Rudy Robinson had 23 for Central.

Ridgewood 58, River Ridge 41: The Rams pulled away in the fourth, outscoring River Ridge 18-6 to coast to their fifth win in a row. Adam Ibrahim led Ridgewood with 17 points. John Childs led the Royal Knights with 16.
