HUDSON — To say Fivay junior Austin Padova has an intimate knowledge of Meadow Oaks Golf and Country Club, host to the Falcons’ match against Land O’Lakes on Wednesday, would be an understatement.
Padova’s parents own the course.
Fivay practices and plays its home matches there, too.
“I’ve played it a million times,” Padova said.
Backed by that familiarity, Padova shot 2-under 32 to lead all golfers after nine holes.
But it was Padova’s birdie on a playoff hole after Fivay and Land O’Lakes finished with a 153 team score that propelled the Falcons to victory on a windy day at Meadow Oaks.
“That was Austin’s best round of the year so far,” Fivay coach Eric Kruck said.
Fivay (5-3) recorded birdie, two pars and double bogey (plus-1) on the playoff hole — the par 4, No. 1 — to defeat Land O’Lakes by a stroke in extra play after the Gators shot two pars and two bogeys (plus-2).
Padova was even through seven before birdieing Nos. 8 and 9 plus the playoff hole.
“On this course you can get a good stretch of birdies going,” Padova said.
The Falcons’ Nick Piro made a difficult 8-foot putt from the fringe on the playoff hole to save par, which turned out to be just as important as Padova’s birdie considering how the teams finished.
Piro was 6 over (40) in regulation for Fivay’s third-best round. Sophomore Jake Schoonover carded 5-over 39, and Travis Paxton came into the clubhouse 8 over (42) for the Falcons’ 153 team score.
Land O’Lakes’ Jon Kopsell, who played with Padova for Ridgewood a year ago, battled his former teammate neck-and-neck but finished a stroke behind at 1-under 33.
Brad Weaver fired 3-over 37, Robbie Nieman was 4 over at 38 and Matt Mooney and Jeremy Williams each carded 45 for the Gators (6-2), who were without No. 3 golfer Jesse Boger. He sat out because of a sore wrist.
