Pasco has named Pat Fortunato as its next baseball coach, Pirates athletic director Tom McHugh announced Thursday morning via Twitter.

Fortunato has been an assistant at Wesley Chapel since 2008 and has served as the Wildcats' JV coach since 2009.

"I believe I'm ready to take over my own varsity program," said Fortunato, who also serves as an assistant football coach for Pasco and teaches PE at Lacoochee Elementary.

Fortunato replaces longtime coach Ricky Giles, who resigned in late March after a district investigation into whether he made threatening remarks to two players during the season. Assistant coach Joe Neale served as Pasco’s interim coach in the spring and helped the Pirates advance to the playoffs with a runnerup finish at district.
