Palm Harbor University hired Calvary Christian coach Mark Carter to take over its boys basketball program.

Carter replaces Michael Walters, the only coach the Hurricanes have had in their 16-year history.

“It was a good fit for me,” Carter said. “I’ve been teaching at Palm Harbor University this year and live in the area.”

A junior varsity coach for five seasons at Largo, Carter was hired to take over Calvary’s varsity program in 2008. In four seasons, Carter guided the Warriors to playoff appearances in 2010 and ’11.

At PHU, Carter inherits a program that lost five senior starters from last year’s team that lost in the district semifinals. The Hurricanes have not been to the playoffs since 2003.

“We’ll be a lot younger next year,” Carter said. “There’s some rebuilding to do, but it will be a good challenge.”
