Palm Harbor University hired former Largo coach Joel Slawinski to take over the baseball program.

Slawinski coached the Packers the past two seasons and guided them to the postseason as a district runnerup in 2010 and 2011. He replaces Jim Felce, who stepped down in May after coaching the Hurricanes for two full seasons. Felce filled in as an interim coach late in 2009 before taking over on a full-time basis. PHU went 14-10 in 2010 and 8-17 this past season.

Slawinski also is the Hurricanes' offensive coordinator. He was an offensive coordinator at Lakeland College, a Division III school in Wisconsin, from 2004-06 and held the same position at Melbourne High from 2007-08. The past two seasons, he was the defensive coordinator at Northside Christian.

His debut with the Hurricanes was a memorable one, as they scored 74 points in a preseason victory over Ridgewood.

"It's nice to be coaching both sports at the same school now," Slawinski said. "Most of the coaches on the football staff coach other sports, so I think that will help get players out for the team. It's a great situation."
