Phyllis Crain has been hired to take over as the girls basketball coach at Land O'Lakes, according to athletic director Karen Coss.

Crain replaces Laurie Tyszko, who spent one season as coach and led the Gators to a 24-3 record, a district title and their first region final.

Crain, formerly Phyllis Kessel, recently served as an assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Tampa, where she spent nine seasons.

Crain is a 2002 graduate of the University of Charleston in Charleston, W.Va., where she earned a degree in physical education. Crain played all four years for the Golden Eagles basketball team and also competed in crew.

Coss said Crain will be joining the Gators' physical education staff as well.
