Tonight at 7:30 unless noted
Largo (5-1, 1-0) at Venice (6-1, 1-0)
Breakdown: The Packers have been a consistent playoff contender with eight straight district titles, currently the longest streak in the county. To make it nine in a row, Largo will have to get past Venice, ranked fourth in the Class 6A state poll. The Indians’ lone loss is to Bradenton Manatee, the top-ranked team in 8A. Packers coach Rick Rodriguez knew Venice would be a formidable opponent and purposely scheduled the bye week before this game to give his team more time to prepare. Largo has not lost coming off a bye week in nine seasons.
Who’s hot: Largo quarterback Donavan Hale is starting to get into a rhythm, averaging nearly 200 yards passing in his past two games. Venice running back Terry Polk is fifth in the state in rushing yards (1,194) and has 14 touchdowns.
Rodney Page’s pick: The Indians’ running attack it too much. Venice, 28-21.
Bob Putnam’s pick: The week off will do wonders for the Packers. Largo, 21-16.
East Lake (6-0, 2-0) at Countryside (5-1, 2-0)
Breakdown: The Eagles are off to their best start in school history and are ranked third in 7A. Now comes their biggest challenge yet with a game against Countryside for a share of first place in 7A-9. East Lake has not fared well against the Cougars, losing the past five meetings. The key will be whether the Eagles’ high-powered offense, which is averaging 46 points per game, can keep up that pace against a Countryside defense that has held East Lake to 21 points or fewer in the past nine meetings.
Who’s hot: East Lake’s Artavis Scott has 12 touchdowns (seven rushing, two receiving, three on returns) this season. Countryside tight end Zack Laurinaitis has 277 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Page: The Eagles have their hands full, but survive. East Lake, 21-17.
Putnam: The Eagles finally get past their nemesis. East Lake, 28-21.
Clearwater Central Catholic (5-1, 2-0) at Calvary Christian (4-2, 0-1)
Breakdown: The Marauders, ranked second in 3A, can move one step closer to their second straight district title with a win. The Warriors, who already have a loss to Admiral Farragut, cannot afford to fall behind more in the standings if they want to make their first playoff appearance. Calvary will have to tighten up on defense after allowing a combined 102 points in its past three games, two of which were losses.
Who’s hot: CCC linebacker Conner Dorris is tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns with four and is second in tackles with 68.
