PCAC championship: Palm Harbor University broke a three-year drought by winning the conference championship 4-1 over St. Petersburg. The Hurricanes (13-0-2) scored in the fourth minute on a goal by Kiril Dimov. St. Petersburg was able to tie the score minutes later, but PHU scored two more goals in the first half to lead 3-1. Robert Sennabaum scored on a penalty kick and freshman Codey Iturri scored late in the half. Iturri scored again with 20 minutes remaining to put the game away.
St. Petersburg Catholic 40, Indian Rocks Christian 38: Michelle Halapio didn’t score a lot Friday night, but when she did it was clutch. Halapio made a jump shot with three seconds left to give the Barons the lead for good in a key Class 3A, District 9 game. SPC finished off its district schedule with a 10-0 record and improved to 18-3. Halapio had only four points, including the game winner. The Barons were led by Annie Artise and Brittney Dunbar, who each scored 12 points. IRC’s Jessica Logemann led her team with 12 points. “We were able to make some plays and get some stops when we needed to,” SPC coach Nick Vandewalle said.
Palm Harbor University 61, Sarasota Riverview 40: The Hurricanes got some revenge by defeating Riverview on the road in an 8A-8 district game. PHU led by seven at the half, then poured it on. Kristine Fuller scored 20 points and Kaylin Ingram had 10. “Kaylin hit some big 3-pointers in the third quarter that quieted the crowd,” PHU coach Darian Dublin said. The Hurricanes (22-2) have won nine straight.
Gibbs 72, Boca Ciega 55: Gary Simon scored 28 points to lead the Gladiators. Gibbs jumped out to a 20-9 lead and never looked back. Simon got help from Devontay Williams (15 points) and Barry Brown (13). Dallas Moore led the Pirates with 17 points.
