Wednesday's region quarterfinals
Admission: $6
At stake: The winners advance to Friday’s region semifinals
Class 6A
Palm Harbor University (21-5) at Plant (14-9), 7: The Hurricanes have a tough road through the playoffs after being shut out against Sarasota in the district final. To get another rematch with the Sailors, PHU will have to get by the Panthers, who snapped out of a two-game losing streak by winning a district title. The Hurricanes will rely on the arm of Taylor Sabol, who has been dominant at times this season.
Class 2A
Naples St. John Neumann (8-10) at Northside Christian (14-3), 4: The Mustangs finally got past rival Shorecrest with an 18-8 win in the district final. Jessica Anderson has pitched well all season, but it was Northside’s bats that came alive in the district tournament.
Shorecrest (13-2) at Community School of Naples (13-6), 7: The Chargers cannot afford another slow start like last week when they allowed Northside to score eight runs in the first inning of the district championship game. Offense has been there but pitching and defense need to come together if Shorecrest is going to make a deep run in the postseason.
