Plant junior Alex Johnson, one of area's top outside hitters this past season, has committed to play collegiately at Georgetown.

The 5-foot-11 Johnson was second on the Panthers with 4.3 kills a game, as well as 37 aces, 21 blocks and 137 digs, a big part of a Plant team that won its fourth straight state title by beating Winter Park in the Class 6A state title match.

Johnson, also a member of the Tampa Bay Juniors 17 Black club team, was invited to the Georgetown advanced skills camp the summer of her sophomore year, when she said she fell in love with the school.

"I am so excited to be playing in the Big East for Georgetown," Johnson said in an e-mail. "It is a great academic school and the volleyball program has a fantastice coaching staff."

She's the sixth member -- and first junior -- on this year's Plant team headed to play Division I volleyball. Seniors Maddie Martin (Penn State), Ali McCurdy (Duke), Becca Howard (UAB), Leah Jordan (Princeton) and Katie Daorai (James Madison) have all signed.
