Plant senior DE David McCarthy, a candidate for valedictorian honors at the school, was presented the Junior Orange Bowl Scholar-Athlete Award before tonight's Class 5A state final.

McCarthy owns a weighted cumulative GPA of 6.77 -- you read that correctly -- and plans to attend Florida or Boston College. Entering the title game against Manatee, he has 15 sacks and more than 100 tackles in his first season as a starter.

Manatee senior RB Sean Smith (4.23 cumulative GPA) also received the honor.
