Playoff profile: Plant FS/WR Scoop Bradshaw

Plant's playoff game against Orlando Dr. Phillips (11-0) will be its 10th straight region semifinal. For the Panthers, the postseason is nothing new.

But for one Panther in particular, Friday's game is a much-awaited first.

Last season, his first as a varsity starter, Johayward "Scoop" Bradshaw missed the playoffs after getting in trouble at school. This year, the two-way player can't wait to experience that win-or-go-home kind of environment.

And with Bradshaw on the field, neither can coach Robert Weiner.

The 5-foot-11 junior is primarily a safety for the Panthers, but he also lines up at slot receiver and returns kickoffs. Bradshaw is second on the team with 97 tackles, and Weiner thinks he and linebacker Tykese Keaton-Baldwin are the best open-field tacklers the school has ever had.

"If a guy runs a reverse sometimes, you know, you get scared because there's only one guy out there," Weiner said. "But if I look out and it's Tykese or Scoop, I'm good with that."

Weiner said it's Bradshaw's physicality on defense that makes him stand out, and in many games this season, that's helped the Panthers (10-1) in a big way. Bradshaw had a pair of interceptions in a 54-6 win against Sickles, and he's also forced two fumbles and recovered one.

Bradshaw, who shares the nickname Scoop with his father, said he especially enjoys making things happen in critical situations. And now that it's the playoffs, he's got even more motivation to do just that.

"I think it'll make me play with a whole bunch of fire," Bradshaw said. "Coach told me, 'Whatever zone you're in, just stay in it.' And I'm staying in my zone, and I'm not going to get out of it until Dec. 13."
