TRINITY — Christian Trinidad recovered a fumble in the end zone in the first quarter and Mitchell never looked back in a 27-0 win against Wiregrass Ranch on Thursday night. The preseason contest was finished between the schools’ junior varsity teams in the fourth quarter.
The Bulls could not move the chains on their first possession, which resulted in a punt situation. The long snap sailed over the kicker’s head and into the end zone, where Trinidad recovered to give the Mustangs the lead.
The Mustangs’ most successful drive at the end of the half almost stalled at the 5-yard line, but Trinidad prevailed again with a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
He finished with 78 yards on 14 carries.
With 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Nate Boler, on just his third carry, broke free of the defense for a 49-yard run to extend the Mustangs’ lead to 21-0. The JV Mustangs scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final score.
Wiregrass Ranch could manage only one first down and lost starting quarterback Shane Bucenell to an injury in the third quarter.
Wiregrass Ranch hosts Wesley Chapel next Friday in the season opener, while Mitchell hosts Anclote.
