TAMPA — Senior running back Cary White rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns and Brian Turner won his first game as Sickles’ new coach in a 49-21 preseason victory against Steinbrenner on Friday night.

White played only the first half and had nine carries as Sickles gained 266 of its 377 total rushing yards before intermission.

Turner took over the Gryphons in July after Pat O’Brien accepted an assistant’s position at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.

Sickles limited Steinbrenner to 135 yards of offense. “I’ve never felt a rush like this before,” said Sickles senior defensive end Marcus Johnson, playing his first varsity game. “This is just the beginning.”

A 91-yard kickoff return was one of two touchdowns for Sickles’ Brieann Dollard. John Melvin Hendrick and Marcos Vega also scored for the Gryphons.

Mylez Smith had two rushing touchdowns and Kendall Pearcy one for Steinbrenner.

The teams combined for 13 fumbles, four lost by Sickles.
