The Hornets officially came away with a one-point win on the road in their classic, though the varsity team trailed 15-10 at the end of the third quarter, when the junior varsity team took the field.

Jon King starred for Weeki Wachee, scoring on a touchdown run of more than 70 yards and adding an interception.

Football newcomer Tyler Wiley forced a fumble and had several other big hits at safety. He led a defense that showed considerable improvement from the spring, when it allowed 49 points in an overtime jamboree win over Gulf.

“Our defense played a heck of a lot better than we did in the spring,” coach Mark Lee said.

Weeki Wachee only allowed three points in the first half. The Hornets open their second varsity season next week at Interlachen.
