Springstead principal Susan Duval said she has not decided whether Eagles baseball coach Frank Vitale will be reinstated from his indefinite suspension.

“I’ll probably make that final decision when we come back from spring break (next week),” she said Monday.

Duval said she removed Vitale from the coaching post Wednesday. She said she made the decision after an issue came to her attention but declined to comment further.

The matter has not affected Vitale’s status as a physical education teacher at the school, Duval said.

Vitale is in his ninth season as Springstead’s head coach. He led the Eagles to their second district title in the past 15 seasons last spring and was named the FACA’s Class 5A, District 8 coach of the year. He did not return a phone call for comment.

Springstead is one of the North Suncoast’s top teams and jumped out to a 7-1 start this year before Vitale’s suspension. The Eagles lost to Hernando 10-7 in their first game without Vitale and held on for a 10-7 victory over Central on Friday.

JV coach George Bennett is filling in during Vitale’s absence.
