The third time against Palmetto was the charm for Seminole in a Class 4A region semifinal at Palmetto. The Warhawks used an up-tempo offensive strategy to attack the Tigers and eventually win 3-0.
Seminole (16-8-1) will play at Lakewood Ranch on Friday.
“Of all the wins we’ve had here in 21 years, this is right up there with some of the best,” Seminole coach Rick Masi said. “A lot of times this season we tell the boys what to do and it goes in one ear and out the other. Tonight, they executed the game plan to a T. Their effort was tremendous. I’m very, very proud of them.”
The Warhawks got two first-half goals. The first came from Liam Murphy on an assist by Shane Butler in the 22nd minute. Four minutes later Paul Gyorkos blasted a shot from 20 yards.
In the second half, Seminole played more defensively.
“Palmetto started to panic,” Masi said. “I don’t think they’ve ever been down like that.”
Thomas Whiting ended scoring for the Warhawks on a breakaway goal with 15 minutes left. Palmetto, which played for the state championship last season, finishes 21-3-1.
