WINTER HAVEN — All Saints’ relied heavily on homefield advantage, and the arm and bat of Lissette Garay to defeat Hernando Christian in the Class A region quarterfinals  2-1 Tuesday.

Garay, who also plays for the Puerto Rican national softball team, pitched a complete game, striking out 16. She also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. Erika Fox was 3-for-4 with two singles and an RBI triple, scoring Alyssa Robare in the third inning.

Garay’s double to rightfield in the eighth inning put the Saints into scoring position. Freshman Danie Guice was 2-for-4 with two singles, which included one in the final inning. After a bunt situation and a mixup in the field by the Lions, Garay crossed home plate to score the winning run.

Garay headed defiantly to the dugout to celebrate with her teammates.

Previously, Hernando Christian was ranked third in the state in Class A. Hernando Christian ends its season at 25-2 and All Saints’ improves to 8-6.

The Saints advance to the Class A region semifinals at Bradenton Christian on Friday.
