TITUSVILLE — Ravin Gilbert knew exactly what she was up against as she got into the blocks for the 100 meters.

“I was seeded second, so I knew I had to push hard,” the Wesley Chapel senior said. “And I knew my competitors from last year. I knew I had to get out of the blocks fast.”

Gilbert did just that Thursday at the Class 2A, Region 3 championships at Astronaut High. She took the 100 in 12:09 seconds, edging Jazzmine Folston of Cocoa High (12.14).

But that was hardly the end of the day for Gilbert, who won the 400 in 59.25 and finished second to Folston in the 200 (25.47).

Gilbert wasn’t the only local runner to have a big day. Anclote’s Argishti Gazari won the 1,600 (4:33.21) and 3,200 (9:40.37) — and made it look easy both times.

Then there were the Griffin brothers of Lakewood. Shaquem won the triple jump with a monster leap of 48-1 ½ that is believed to be a school record. His brother, Shaquill,  was second at 47-4 ½.

“It felt great,” Shaquem said of his jump. “I knew I was real close to it all year. …I still feel like I’ve got another foot left in me. I’m going to try to bring it out at state.”

He may have to, if he wants to beat Shaquill, who has had a knack recently of doing his brother one better. The twins are always competing at everything — even to see who can eat the most food.

So when they get to state — “I’m coming for him,” Shaquill said.

Annie Harwig of Tampa Catholic is also dreaming big at state. The senior transfer from Texas won the girl’s pole vault at 10-6, but decided to keep going. She matched her career best of 11-0 (for the third week in a row), but failed on her next attempt at 11-6 because she was too tired.

“I’m excited for state,” Harwig said. “Everything started to come together last week and now …I’m on. I’m ready to go much higher. My goal is to get a bigger pole next week and go for 12 (feet).”

The Lakewood boys finished second overall with 81 points, eight behind champion Immokalee. The Lakewood girls came in fifth with 50.

Also qualifying were Anclote’s Spencer Guerette in the 1,600 and 800 and Wesley Chapel’s Courtney Prengaman in the high jump.

2A-2: Sharks fare well at Bolles

Nature Coast continued its strong season when James Harkless claimed the Class 2A, Region 2 title in the 1,600 meters at Jacksonville Bolles. The sophomore runner was one of a handful of Sharks who advanced to next week’s state meet.

Nature Coast girls who qualified for state included: Mackenzie Medler (triple jump), Amy Holmes (triple jump), Courtney Liddle (discus), Bronte Cameron (100 hurdles) and the 4x100 team of Cameron, Ashley Chevalier, Brianna Baugher and Alicia Gentz.

The Sharks’ boys team advanced in the 4x800 and 4x100 relays, and Tyler Moore placed in the top four in the 3,200.

Ridgewood also had a strong showing. Ashley Rodriguez led the district champion girls team by moving on in the 300 hurdles.

Thomas Rodriguez and Tony Hays advanced in the high jump and will be joined at state by Max Livingstone (400) and Travis Lord (300 hurdles).

A-2: Wildcat earns state berth

Academy at the Lakes’ Andrea Mauger qualified for state in the shot put at the region meet at Orlando First Academy.

Her throw of 33 feet, 11.5 inches earned fourth place and set a personal record. It was a foot and a half farther than her district championship performance last week.

A-3: ’Canes pair moving on

Bishop McLaughlin senior Evan Barhonovich placed second in the boys discus (138-09) and sophomore Taylor Mcdonald third in the girls shot put (32-11) at Shorecrest to qualify for state.
