TITUSVILLE — Ravin Gilbert knew exactly what she was up against as she got into the blocks for the 100 meters.

“I was seeded second, so I knew I had to push hard,” the Wesley Chapel senior said. “And I knew my competitors from last year. I knew I had to get out of the blocks fast.”

Gilbert did just that Thursday at the Class 2A, Region 3 championships at Astronaut High. She took the 100 in 12:09 seconds, edging Cocoa’s Jazzmine Folston (12.14).

But that was hardly the end of the day for Gilbert, who won the 400 in 59.25 and finished second to Folston in the 200 (25.47).
Then there were Lakewood’s Griffin brothers. Shaquem won the triple jump with a monster leap of 48-1 ½ that is believed to be a school record. His brother, Shaquill, was second at 47-4 ½.

“It felt great,” Shaquem said of his jump. “I knew I was real close to it all year. …I still feel like I’ve got another foot left in me. I’m going to try to bring it out at state.”

He may have to, if he wants to beat Shaquill, who has had a knack recently of doing his brother one better. The twins are always competing — even to see who can eat the most food. So when they get to state — “I’m coming for him,” Shaquill said.

The Lakewood boys finished second overall with 81 points, eight behind champion Immokalee. The Lakewood girls came in fifth with 50.

Among the other boys to qualify for state were Lakewood’s Shaquill Griffin in the 100, Tim Holmes in the 300 hurdles and Devontae Persha in the 800. For the girls, Lakewood’s Sharell Keys and Kajira Davis qualified in the 100, Erika Allen in the 200 and Ashlee Funderburke in the 300 hurdles.

A-3: Mustang girls stay on top

ST. PETERSBURG — Northside Christian’s girls kept their streak intact, winning the Class A-3 region track title for the fourth straight season.

But this one was the toughest yet.

The Mustangs scored 113 points at Shorecrest to beat defending state champion Holy Trinity by 13.

“We needed everyone for this meet,” Northside coach Jeff Goodwin said. “We had a ton of records. We needed all of them.”

Once again, the Mustangs’ seniors came through. Katelyn Greenleaf won the 800 (two minutes, 18.02 seconds) and finished second in the 1,600 in a school record 5:01.95. Victoria Goodwin also set school records in winning the 300 hurdles (45.70) and finishing second in the 100 hurdles (15.20). Asia Olds set another school record by going 18-3 1/2 to finish third in the long jump.

Northside’s Sarah Schultz won the triple jump (33-10 ½) and Schultz was supposed to be part of the 4x400 but was unable to go. No problem. Haley Gossard took her place and teamed with Goodwin, Olds and Ashley Johnson to win in 4:06.28.

“We’ll still be the underdogs next week,” Jeff Goodwin said. “But if everyone runs the way they’re capable of, we’ll be in the mix.”

Admiral Farragut’s Brittany McGee had another strong performance, winning the 100 hurdles (15.06), taking second in the long jump (18-6 ½) and finishing fourth in the high jump (5-0).

On the boys side, the Mustang boys finished fourth, highest among county teams.

Northside Christian’s 4x800 relay team of Mario Ojeda, Lucio Ojeda, Matthew Montanari and Joe Chapman won in a school-record 8:01.66. Ojeda also won the 800 (1:56.77). The Mustangs’ other champion was Jeffrey Golden in the triple jump (42-11).

Clearwater Central Catholic had two champions: Diquan Walker in the long jump (22-3 ½) and Ben Kieler in the high jump (6-2).

Other county athletes who won individual titles were Admiral Farragut’s Michael Pitts in the shot put (89-0 ½) and St. Petersburg Catholic’s Ryan Green in the 100 (10.96). Green, who won the 200 at districts meet, did not finish the race in the preliminaries.

A-2: Calvary maintains win streak

A week after winning their first district title, Calvary Christian’s girls won the Class A, Region 2 title, outscoring Lake Mary Prep 87-65 at Orlando First Academy. The Warriors surged ahead with a strong performance in the relay events with first-place finishes in the 4x100 (50.56) and 4x400 (4:10.54). Calvary also had two individual champions: Jess Stewart in the triple jump (33-8) and Jessica Maggio in the 100 hurdles (15.02)

On the boys side, Indian Rocks Christian’s Michael Cavonis won the 400 (51.05). The Golden Eagles also took first in the 4x400 (3:29.17). Calvary Christian’s Zach Hubbard won the shot put (45-4¾).
