Ridgewood has promoted Mike Bua as its next boys basketball coach, principal Andy Frelick announced Friday in an e-mail.

Bua has been an assistant with the Rams for six seasons. He takes over for Gary Anders, who resigned last month after 31 seasons of head coaching - one year before his time in the Deferred Retirement Option Program expires. Anders has said he intends to remain on as the school's athletic director next year.

"Mike has been a vital part of the basketball program and has been a lifelong Ridgewood supporter," Frelick said in an e-mail. "He bleeds orange and blue. The consensus of the committee was that Mike could keep up the strong tradition and excellence of the program set by retiring head coach Gary Anders."

Anders and Bua were not immediately available for comment.

Bua was one of four who applied to replace Anders. He appeared to be the favorite for several reasons including his familiarity with the program and his close relationship with Anders and the current team. Bua also was on campus as a teacher. That's significant because Ridgewood anticipates it will lose roughly 20 teaching positions with the opening of Fivay next fall. That meant Frelick could only offer the position as supplemental to an external candidate.

Bua is the second basketball coach hired this week, joining Oliver Simmons (Springstead).
