Ridgewood's Karissa Bertling, the Times' North Suncoast girls track and field athlete of the year, has orally committed to East Tennessee State University.

Bertling chose East Tennessee University over offers from USF, Jacksonville University and Army among others.

"She was being recruited by a lot of schools," Ridgewood track coach Sue Vien said.

As a junior, Bertling ran 24.80 in the 200 meter dash at the Class 3A state track and field meet to place third. She was also fifth in the state in the 100 and the 400.

"I'm very proud of her," Vien said. "She will be an asset to any program. She's a hard worker and does all the right things. She's got such a great attitude."
