River Ridge’s girls basketball team continues to turn itself around under third-year coach Joeyn Dearsman.

The Royal Knights suffered through a 4-56 stretch before Dearsman took over. But River Ridge (14-6) has already secured its first winning season in seven years and, Tuesday night, knocked off Mitchell 48-45 to earn their first victory over their rival in that span.

“We’re trying to get through that curse,” Dearsman said.

River Ridge exorcized its demons behind its two biggest players all year. Senior Vashoula Kostogiannes scored 19 points, shot 50 percent from the field, grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and added six steals in the victory.

Freshman Leah Ford added 14 points and eight rebounds. She’s developed into the team’s top scoring threat, averaging 16 points per game.

Another key contributor all season has been point guard Jalynn Hoolihan, who runs the offense well and pulled down seven rebounds from the backcourt in the win over the Mustangs.
