River Ridge has promoted JV boys basketball coach Chuck Butler to head coach.

“It’s something I’ve always loved to do,” Butler said Monday evening.

Butler was an all-state basketball player at Citrus before turning pro in jai alai out of high school. A horrific back injury ended his career in 1995, and he eventually moved to Pasco County.

He started mentoring boys basketball players at River Ridge about five years ago.

“I fell in love with it,” said Butler, 42.

Butler coached the JV team for the last three seasons and took over as head coach after Rick Conn was let go late in the season after his team racked up too many technical fouls.

Butler faces a tough rebuilding challenge after the Royal Knights’ 3-22 season, but he’ll return one of the North Suncoast’s top talents, 6-foot-8 sophomore John Childs.
